Bishop Thomas Curry, Auxillary Bishop, Archdiocese of Los Angeles

Extremism and the Assault on Religious Liberty By Politically Correct Terrorists

Bishop Thomas Curry, Auxiliary Bishop of Los Angeles, an Expert on Religious Liberty Exposes the Bastardization of the First Amendment and Outlines the Real Risks We are Facing at the Hands of Politically Correct Extremists

Terrorism has been defined as acts designed to disrupt and change our fundament freedoms and way of life. In this context those who are using slight-of-hand rhetoric and progressive political correctness filters to change the intent of the Founding Fathers and the protection, of a natural God given right, religious freedom, granted to us in the first amendment, are social-political terrorists.

In his book, Farewell to Christendom, Bishop Curry traces the developments behind Americans' determination to deprive their new government of power in the sphere of religion, and evaluates Supreme Court decisions in the light of that determination. From its beginnings, the federal government involved itself in religious matters, for example by proclaiming Days of Prayer. It was difficult to shed habits built up over more than 1500 years of Christendom, especially in what was a nearly homogenous society. Only when immigrants, many of them Catholics, began arriving in substantial numbers did there arise a challenge to cultural-religious habits that had been accepted almost without question by Americans at large.

Currently, discussions in courts and by commentators are dominated by the ridiculous theory that the First Amendment requires government to be neutral between religions, and between religion and non-religion. Again, this implies a power the government does not have.
